Topic: talent=carllong will not be posting with us for 2 weeks. (Please Read) (Read 671 times)

Just tonight, between 10:30 PM and 11 PM tonight (05/15/06), talent=carllong was monitored attemping to hack/log into 3 Admin accounts (names of which withheld). Because of that, we are giving him a 2 week no posting ban because he hasn't been a trouble maker before Even though he claims he was just fooling around, and he wasn't meaning any harm...this is a serious matter. But if anybody else tries to do this in the future, they will be banned for good. That is all.

This is just my opinion here. I've run countless message boards in the past, the most successful of which got about 110 posts per day. When I ran that board my account would be attacked, on average, twice a month. Sometimes it would be attacked by people who were long time members of the board. There's only one thing to do to people who do something like this: ban them. There is no excuse for attempting to hack into an admin's account. My uncle hacked into the Army's system once just to prove to people he could. What did the Army do? They took away his computers, slapped him with a hefty fine, and forced him to do community service. He was just doing it to prove a point, but still got a strong penalty for the prank. Just because talent=carllong has been a regular member here is no reason to let him off lightly...he should be banned permanently from the board. That's just my opinion though and, of course, I don't make the rules here...just thought I'd give my perspective.

I knew it would be either you or Mayfieldfan that would be the first to chip in with the "hang him!" type post...lol.
All kidding aside, yes it was a serious offense. However, I think it was just more a nosey kid type thing than it was an attempt to do anything malicious. Maybe I am wrong, but that's the impression that I got. This is why he isn't permanently banned. If any other evidence comes to light that it was anything more than snooping around, then rest assured that he will be forever banned.
Once again people....this was a one time get out of jail free (almost) card. ANYBODY else caught doing anything similar won't get the same break. It will be a permanent ban, without warning or discussion.

In all the ways, to prohibit a member is not possible really. Indeed, it's enough for him to be re-registered with another pseudo. Addresses it IP will say you to me? Easy is enough to poster from another PC or to have a supplier of different access. To prevent the hacking is very difficult. It's my opinion but an advertisement should be better put relating to it on the forum to render comprehensible to him that this kind of behavior is not desirable. Thus all the members will know about what it did. Shame goes better psychologically that exclusion. Exclusion generates the feeling of revenge. Shame involves the desire for being repurchased.

VERY good point Nascar_Vd! If you exclude someone, they may just pull out all the stops to get their revenge, such as slamming Carl on other forums, and that's not what we want here. Like I said above, he was most likely just being a nosey kid. That's why I voted to keep him and just give him a short suspension. If I thought he was trying to destroy the forum, he'd no longer be here. He can still read posts on here, he just can't reply or post until after the Coke Cola 600. On a different note.... The shame here, is that I understand more of what Nascar_Vd says than some of our posters on here that have lived in this country all their lives. People that should have a decent grasp on the English language by now. While his sentence structure gets a bit lost in translation, Nascar_Vd spells his words correctly and speaks English well for someone who didn't grow up with English as his native tounge. Kudos to him!

Im not going to argue penalties here. I just want to know how one even begins to go about doing stuff like this. I have had my computer for 5 years and i can barley do anything outside of emails, downloading por...er....misc. material, Music, burning cd's. And making profiles. Other than that, I have no clue on what I am doing here. I would not even know where to begin on hacking stuff. Yall are smart people here.

It's a shame. I've always respected him. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and come back.

I doubt he'll be able to come back out of sheer shame - everyone will be looking at him sideways to make sure their wallet doesn't go missing or something from now on...

That's what I was thinking. But maybe he'll still come back and explain himself and regain our trust. Still though, he was one of the posters that I least expected to try to do something like that.

What he did was try to log onto the user names of most of the admins....trying out various passwords. He says he was just checking to see if our passwords were too easy to figure out. Even if he was trying to help, that's no way to go about it. It was red flag city.
John, when James sent out this topic, he set it to notify everybody. He just wanted to make sure that the topic got the attention it deserved so that there was no future confusion, and so that no one attempted something like this again. To my knowledge, that was the first time the "notify everybody" option has been used here. Our apologies if that caused any inconvenience. It was geared more towards our less frequent visitors.

Wow CLF00...thanks for telling people how to potentially get around a ban. Please don't help. However, there are more ways than just an IP ban, not to mention it is pretty rare that a Mod is not signed on.
