Interesting note here: Greg Biffle's team is currently 39th in owner points. I know the odds are very slim, but I'd love to see him miss the top 35 cut after the first 5.
lol, that would be something if one of the top teams like that did miss a race. Unlikely, but would be something to see.

How about Tony Stewart not in the top 35!
We'd all have to get around the bonfire and sing "Coom Buy Ya Dancing Nazi's" if that happened?

But Tony would be in the race no matter what since he's the most current champion. But that would open a whole new can of worms because Terry Labonte wouldn't be locked in. But he was going to stop racing after the end of the first 5 races except for the R/C's in the #96.

I think the 16 will be back in the top 35 really soon, like after Las Vegas, remember that is another Roush dominant track.

If Biffle's motor hadn't blown up he'd probably be in the top 10 or 12 in points now so thats just a total fluke he's that low.
I listened to Dale Jr's radio show this past week on XM and he talked about Schelmerdine quite a bit. According to Jr Schelmerdine told him he was all done after making the Daytona 500 and was going to retire. So for whatever thats worth thats what I heard.

Well, if that's one way to go out, he definitely deserves to go out on "top" of the UnderDog world. Anyway, I bet one day with all of the engine and tranny problems, there will be a top team missing a NEXTEL Cup race. It's getting ridiculous, if you have to lock in the Top-35 then it's a complete contradiction of qualifying for 35 cars.

I'm starting to think top 35 is too many locked in cars. Wouldn't you guys think it would be better to only have a top 30 or 25? Then have maybe just 1 or 2 spots that can be filled by "non top 25/30" owner points like the old fashioned provisionals. That would allow more teams to compete to make races but provide a little bit of a safety net for good teams that crash or blow up during qualifying.
Especially at this Daytona 500 it just didn't seem like enough spots were available.

Neither. I want to see teams in the race because they were fast enough to make it, not because they've competitively run most of the races. If you're too slow, too bad.

It should be the top 25 in points locked in
I'd lessen it a bit more. The top 25 part is fine, but make a modification to that. Instead of just locking them into every race, use a "mulligan" system. Any time a top 25 driver is not amongst the 43 fastest cars in the field he gets locked in, but he can only use that 5 times for the entire season. If he uses up his 5 mulligans he will no longer be locked into the field and will be forced to qualify on time. And yeah, Biffle being that low is only a fluke, but you never know what might happen. In 2000 Jeff Burton finished 3rd in points. After 5 races in 2001 he was 36th in points.

Last I heard from Victory Motorsports was that they were having getting commitments from sponsers (go figure) There is a lot of interest up until time to cut the check. That sounds too familar.

Yes, something that is very common. Maybe they will still get something together. Who knows! We'll just have to wait & see. If it was a good deal, then I'd really want Carl in that ride!
