Well heck. Forgot a Darrell Basham pic for day 34. I guess I'll find one for day 134. I need to stop spending so much time on this thread anyways.

Who could ever forget the Tabasco Fiasco. Until his Truck Championship, it was probably what defined Todd Bodine's career:

and for #36, from the previous year, Cope's Skittles car. IMHO, the Skittles paint scheme caught your eye more than the #36/#38/#18 M&M schemes used since. I wish they still used it.

(edit: new image; old one was bigger than i thought)

I wonder about the "what might have been" for both teams. Derrike ran pretty well considering that he was driving for a small start-up team. He even finished top five in his last race with them. Since losing this ride, Derrike never has seemed to run as well. Todd, on the other hand, had quite a few DNQs (as did the drivers that replaced him. Darrell Waltrip used champ provisionals in just about ever race with that team). But he also a 2nd place start at Atlanta and a solid run there as well.

Bodine always ran well at Atlanta in the 90's. He could take a junky car like Team Tabasco or Eel River and put up near the front.

Guys, forgive me for being behind a bit, but I've had a busy weekend and wanted to catch up a bit now that I've finally had a chance to upload a few more pics to my photobucket.com account. So bear with me while I lead up to my post for today, February 9, 2009 - the 39TH day of the year!

#32 Philip Duffie Bob Beard Buick 1988
Duffie (a fellow Georgia native, like myself) made a few Cup starts in the late 80's. Bob Beard owned several car dealerships in the Atlanta area and also sponsored fellow Georgian, Ken Ragan (via his Bob Beard FORD lot) for the 1988 season. Duffie made 1 or 2 races in 1988 in this scheme and DNQ'ed for at least 1 other race.

#34 Donnie Allison Allen's Associated Glass LLC Oldsmobile owned by Ken Allen
The Allens Glass team competed in Cup from 1987 into the mid 90's, always on a part-time basis. They had some really cool paint schemes! Here, Donnie Allison is driving a 1987 model Oldsmobile Cutlas in the 1988 Twin 125's at Daytona.

#34 Rodney Combs FAB Fabric Softener Buick owned by Ken Allen 1988
At the fall Atlanta race. FAB also sponsored Phil Barkdoll's team in at least one other event in 1988 and I seem to recall that they were "sniffing around" to perhaps launch a major marketing promotion in 1989 with a full-time sponsorship but sadly, that never materialized. Combs had just split with the Winkle/AC Spark Plug #97 team, Started & Parked an RCR #22 entrant for Richard Childress (in perhaps what is one of the first 5 S&P travesties in the sport....and NO....S&Ping has NOT been a part of the sport since its inception....it only happened 20 or fewer times until 2004 and that debacle featuring Morgan and Kirk)

And since its, "Black History Month"  Roll Eyes or excuse me for not being politically correct, I guess that should be, "African American History Month", here is Wendell Scott's last race he ever competed in. RIP Mr. Scott. He was a TRUE racer who didn't come into the former sport (during a time when blacks WERE very discriminated against, especially in the south and in NASCAR circles!) via some free-pass, "Drive For Diversity" program that was only created by NA$CAR and Brian France/Mike Helton to prevent a lawsuit. This was a *REAL* man who WORKED his way into the former sport and succeeded at it!!! The world needs more people like him nowadays who don't feel like they're owed a "free ride" just because of the color of their skin or the actions of people who died 100 years ago.

#36 HB Bailey Almeda Auto Parts/National Motors Pontiac 1994
He came out of retirement to become the very first NASCAR driver to officially make a lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a qualifying attempt for the innagural Brickyard 400 in 1994. Sadly, he along with half of the population of China DNQ'ed. (this race featured the largest entry list of any race in the modern era of Cup)

#38 Alan Kulwicki Hardees Ford 1985
A DNQ -- This team also campaigned a #32 & #35 in 1985. When Kulwicki bought the team from the guy that originally owned it early in his 1986 Rookie-Of-The-Year season, he changed the car number from 32 to 35. However, I would *LOVE* to have a picture of this #38 and Cale Yarborough's #28 Hardee's cars together.

#38 Butch Gilliland
David's dad. The next year, Ralph's went on to sponsor Brett Bodine's #11 Ford. Interesting that Coca Cola sponsored both Butch & David Gilliland 10 years later. (via their "Coke Family Of Drivers" when David drove the M&M's car in 2007)

#39 Joe Ruttman Pedigree Food For Dogs Chevrolet owned by Roulo Bros. Racing
LOVED the Pedigree paint schemes! This team was also the first "satelite" team for Hendrick Motorsports. They got chassis & R&D engines from Hendrick in exchange for testing ways to cheat the rules. The Roulo Bros were still around in ARCA last year. Jim Sauter, Dick Trickle, Scott Lagasse SR, Jack Sprague and several others have driven their Cup cars, all of which were partnerships with Hendrick. The same people that own Pedigree also own M&M's (something to think about the next time you eat candy!  Wink) so the Roulo's actually *BROUGHT* M&M's into the former sport. Wonder if K-Y Busch even has any clue about his sponsor's history?

39 Blackie Wangerin 1988
Blackie *ALWAYS* attempted the Daytona 500 until he retired in the mid 90's and even snuck into 1 or 2 of them in the late 70's/early 80's. Since I started following the former sport in 1988, he was *ALWAYS* the slowest car, by-far, at Daytona during Speedweeks!  Grin  Usually a good 10mph off of Norm Benning, who was usually the penultimate runner & a good 17mph off of the next-slowest competitor, Delma Cowart, who was at least 40mph slower than the person in front of him!!!   Tongue (bless their hearts!)  I'm guessing Troy Wangerin, who DNQ'ed the #40 in ARCA could be Blackie's son?

Boo Guitar Hero!!!

Gayness.

Here's a new idea.

Why not learn how to play a *REAL* guitar? For the same amount of effort and money, you can *actually* do the REAL thing!

 Roll Eyes

Kids nowadays.  Roll Eyes  Nothing but a bunch of "young punks."

I do, although I still suck at playing the real guitar. But the games are fun, esp when you're having a party and drunk.

Yeah, we only have groupies and fame!  Tongue Grin

(PS--my groupies are 450+ pounds, and my "fame" only consists of drunken rednecks telling me that I, "Playyye guuud keeybords!" or some other instrument they mistake me for playing!  Wink)

AND---I believe I had my days of the year wrong in my last post. I cannot play Guitar Hero (my mind refuses to work "that way!") and I also CANNOT COUNT! (kids, stay off drugs and don't play "real" guitars!)

SO........am I correct in assuming that today, February 10 is the 42nd day of the year??

#40 Tommy Kendall EDS Chevrolet 1990
EDS was owned by Ross Perot. Yup, the same Ross Perot that ran for President in 1992 & 1996 and founded the Reform Party.

#41 Larry Pearson, Greg Sacks & Dave Marcis (1991 & 1992 respectively)
The best Kellogg's scheme EVER! My beeper/pager (remember those things?) code was "41" because of this car!

#41 Johnny "Juice" Smith & Johnny Rumley (Busch)
I am biased towards yellow racing cars, but what a great, simple scheme. No flames or any other gay crap that takes away from the simplistic beauty of blending colors together. I miss the old days of stripes & two-toned cars.

And BTW---if this *IS* the 42nd day of the year, I don't have any #42's that stand out and are post worthy. Maybe Tenney or Paul can design a #42 "42nd President" car for Obama/Biden to post here!  Wink  Or I could take the "zero" off of my #420 NR2k3 car and show off my NORML sponsored HIGH Performance Motorsports car?! Cheesy
