I hate Cheerios and gaudy yellow paint schemes, yet somehow, that one kicked ass.

A bit girlish, but still pretty neat:

Casey Atwood's old scheme:

Buddy Baker's Gray Ghost:

Davey Allison in 1987 before Texaco hopped on board. i prefer the car without the sponsorship b/c it has a cleaner look. of course, i'm sure the team has a different outlook than i:

Hoss Ellington's team used to run the #28 in the 70s. Here's Ellington's #28 Gilmore Chevrolet, driven by A.J. Foyt.

The 28 Davey drove is one of my fav all time schemes.  The white/gold and black scheme is awesome.

#28 & #29 hold signifigant value for me as a fan of the former sport. As a 7, 8 & 9 year old kid, these schemes somehow got me interested in the former sport. Cale Yarborough was my favorite driver at the time & I really dug all of his Hardee's schemes even when backdating them in my dad's old early 80's programs from races at Atlanta/Talladega. Strangely enough, there weren't (and still aren't) very many Hardee's around my house. They appear within the region but it still takes 30 minutes or so to find the closest of their "restaraunts." And back then, trying to get my 60+ year old "immediate family" to drive 30+ minutes was like pulling teeth. (it NEVER happened  Cry )

Cale Yarborough driving Harry Ranier's Chevy in 1985

The team switched to a Ford for 1986 and used this horrible pic for Ford's main NASCAR print ad campaign (even though Bill Elliott made a huge splash for Ford in 1985....this ad also featured the horrible "devil horns" on poor ol' Cale....ahhh the years before Photoshop, eh?)

In 1987, Cale bought Jack Beebe's team (formerly the #47 Race Hill Farms Buick) and changed to the #29 and campaigned Oldsmobiles part-time on the circuit

In 1988 (his final year as a driver) he entered every race as an owner. Cale drove 10 superspeedway races & Dale Jarrett drove in the rest of the races in this BEAUTIFUL car! One of my all-time favorite schemes!

In 1989, Dale Jarrett was the full-time driver for Cale Yarborough Motorsports after Cale's retirement as a driver. The team started 1989 off with this blue Hardee's "Deluxe" scheme but switched back to an identical scheme ran in 1987 after the first 1/3rd of the season.

ah, great pics, Matt!

When I think of the number 29, Dave Dion comes to mind. Like so many other regional drivers, he never had much success in Cup, but he could flat out dominate up North, from local late models to the Busch North Series.

Here's a picture of his Ford Fairmount Futura race car from 1979:

Here's a newer one from 2006:

Sadly, like so many other drivers, this legend got pushed out of his own series that he was so successful in (the Busch North). The great expansion of that series prohibited his marginally funded team from running all the races. Then his long time sponsor, Berlin City, got new owners and decided not to renew his sponsorship for 2008. I checked his website to see if he currently races, and it appears that he no longer does: http://www.dion-bros-racing.com/april2008.html

Is this thread just limited to NASCAR/ARCA, or can we use open-wheel/short track pictures of cars when applicable?

I always thought the purple Cartoon Network paint scheme was pretty cool.  When RCR signed Jeff Green to drive the #30 car I thought it was kind of ironic that he drove the #29 car and a few years later was team mate to the #29 car with a different team.

I can't stand Kevin Harvick now, but on that one day he did what even some of the biggest Earnhardt haters felt NASCAR needed.

Great pics Matt and Fish! Ive always been a fan of Cale Yarborough since he gave John Andretti his big break in CUP. I was so happy to see him win the Pepsi 400 that year, for both of them. Its too bad Cale never had much success as an owner after 97, although Rick Mast drove the wheels off that car in 99. Also have followed Dion in the Busch North Series. He set on the pole at the Lee Usa race I went too. I saw this and was going to post it on the 27th but for whatever reason did not, but Matts photos persuaded me to do so now:

One of my favorite drivers of all time is Walter Ballard, the 1971 Cup rookie of the year. Like so many other drivers i've mentioned in this thread, he was an independent underdog owner / driver. But he had even less resources than most of them, and had to mortgage his house and sell many valuble positions to compete in the circuit in 1971. Despite only supposed to compete for one season, he "caught the bug" and ended up racing full time through 1975.

at Daytona in '74:

His hauler actually looked pretty good compared to many from this era:

Beginning in 1976, he started fielding cars for others, most notable Tighe Scott (a great dirt tracker) and Terry Blevins. Blevins ended up dominating Rookie of the Year that season, but "lost" to Skip Manning due to a poor decision by NASCAR (probably because Manning tried the full season. but still Scott had more top fives, top tens, ran bette, etc.) This decision led to the formation of the current rules used by NASCAR to determine ROTY winners.

This last picture is from http://www.3sistersracing.com/driver_terrybivins.htm a website that has some good information but is.....uh, poorly laid out.

Wish i had more time to talk about Ballard. He was one of those drivers that defined what an underdog driver was. Maybe if i have time i'll post something about him on RacingUnderdogs.com about him....
